Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple
Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple

"Nikkozan Rinnoji" originaly meant the temples of the entire Nikkosan area. Even after the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism due to government policy enforced in the beginning of the period of Meiji, main temples and halls such as Hondo, Taiyuin, Jigendo, Jougyo-do, Chuzenji, Gohotendo, Shihonryuji, and 15 sub-temples have been unified. Now all of them are called "Rinnoji" as a generic name. Sanbutsudo (the main hall), which is said to have the strongest energy, is currently under big repairs for the first time in about 50 years. It will last till 2018.

Nikko Futarasan Shrine
Nikko Futarasan Shrine

This vast shrine consists of 3 shrines; the main shrine in the west of Toshogu Shrine, Chugushi (small shrine) by Lake Chuzenji, and Okumiya (rear shrine) at the top of Mt. Nantai. Even the Shinkyo Bridge (sacred bridge) at the entrance to the Nikko Sannai area is a part of the shrine. It was originally a holy ground for Shugendo, a Japanese mountain asceticism-shamanism incorporating Shinto and Buddhist concepts. Kegon Falls and Irohazaka also belong to its holy precincts. This shrine is also popular among young couples, as there are various places to pray, such as the sacred tree, Meotosugi (husband and wife trees), Oyakosugi (parent and child trees), miraculous fountain, etc. in the main shrine. Water from the miraculous fountain is allowed to be taken home. Their Ema (votive picture of a horse) is popular among girls who are looking for a partner, as the shape of a heart is drawn on it.

The tower has 3 floors, and from each floor you can see the Nehan falls and Hannya falls in addition to the Kegon falls.
