Asakusa - Sanja Festival

  • Asakusa / TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN℠

From May 17 to 19, the Sanja Festival will be held around Asakusa Shrine. The days in which the Sanja Festival is held are said to be the liveliest in Asakusa all year, and it is a seasonal event that represents early summer in Tokyo. On the first day, a long line of people wearing historical clothing marches through the area, and the Asakusa area is immediately enveloped in festival atmosphere. The second day sees around 100 portable shrines coming out from around Asakusa Shrine, which all head towards the shrine itself. On the third day, three large portable shrines come out from Asakusa Shrine, and go around various places in the town. The sight of the numerous shrine bearers in their costumes carrying the shrines with all their might is truly impressive! Enjoy this incredibly lively Japanese festival.
