June marks the start of the rainy season in Japan. Hydrangea macrophylla flowers are representative of this rainy season!
The approach to Ohirasan Shrine, located in Tochigi City, Tochigi, has a great hydrangea macrophylla flower spot called Ajisai-zaka (“hydrangea macrophylla hill”).
On the 1,000 stone steps to the shrine, around 2,500 of these flowers bloom, including Western hydrangeas, lacecap hydrangeas, and mountain hydrangeas.
The best time to see the hydrangea macrophylla flowers is from late June to early July. Be sure to check out these hydrangea flowers which can only be seen during the rainy season.
