Ryuzu Falls in Nikko is a mountain stream waterfall that flows at a length of around 210m and a width of around 10m. The water flows on rocks shaped like stairs, created long ago by eruptions from Mt. Nantai. The rock near the waterfall basin is split into two. The name of the falls comes from the fact that the waterfall stream looks like a dragon’s beard – “Ryuzu” meaning “dragon’s head” in Japanese. Unlike Kegon Falls, the water here does not flow down vertically. However, it’s still well worth seeing, as the sight of the water flowing, looking like it’s powerfully sliding down the stairs, is truly impressive. Part of it is frozen in winter, and the area is known for letting visitors enjoy magical ice scenery created by the harsh winters. Check out these beautiful sculpted shapes created by the grand nature of winter!
