The Sanja Festival (aslo Sanja Matsuri) will be held near Asakusa Shrine from May 16 to 18. It is a representative event of early summer in Tokyo. On the first day, a long line of people wearing traditional clothing marches through the area, enveloping all of Asakusa with a festive mood. On the 2nd day, around 100 mikoshi portable shrines appear around Asakusa Shrine and head for the shrine itself. Three large portable shrines depart from Asakusa Shrine on the 3rd day and go around the area. The sight of large crowds of shrine bearers wearing costumes and cheerfully holding the portable shrines is truly impressive! Enjoy this lively Japanese festival.
