At Tsuruga Castle (Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle) you can enjoy scenery with beautiful fallen leaves from late October to early November every year. The white walls and red-brick castle tower (the only of its kind in Japan) strike a colorful balance with the red and gold maple trees and ginkgo trees, and the contrast charms visitors.
The castle has its origins in the Higashi Kurokawa Yakata (Eastern Kurokawa Residence) built by Ashina Naomori in 1384. In 1593 Gamo Ujisato built the tower and named the castle Tsuruga. During the Boshin War is was the setting for fierce battles. Currently the restored castle tower serves as a historical museum. A famous spot where you can truly feel the history and beauty of Aizu along with the autumn leaves.
