At Sensoji Temple, located in the Asakusa neighborhood of Tokyo, the Setsubun Festival is held every year in early February. Visitors can experience a traditional event for warding off evil in winter and praying for fortune in the new year. In 2026, the Year of the Horse, the festival will feature men born in this Asian Zodiac year, along with performers, singing “Fuku wa uchi” (luck is in) while scattering beans and throwing them at worshippers from the special stage installed on the east side of the main hall – a practice called “Mame maki” (bean throwing). This is a Japanese custom in which eating an amount of thrown beans one more than your current age will bring you good health and longevity. Enjoy the unique ceremonies and bustle of Setsubun.
