  • Nikko / Kinugawa Onsen / Aizu

In the grounds of Rinnoji Temple in Nikko you can find the Kongo Cherry Tree, a cherry tree known as a natural monument. Located in front of the Sanbutsudo Hall, this tree is a rare variety considered to be a mutation of the wild mountain cherry tree. It is said to be around 500 years old. Its unique in that its buds are pink, but when the blossoms bloom they produce large white flowers. The sight of the cherry tree standing beside the historic temple buildings, part of the World Heritage Site “Shrines and Temples of Nikko," draws many visitors who come to feel the spring atmosphere in Nikko.
